Businessman forgets jewel when he goes for a smoke – then it is seized by security police
A mainland businessman almost lost a shopping bag containing a HK$1 million blue diamond at Hong Kong International Airport today.
Panic was averted, however, when it was found that the unaccompanied bag – and its valuable contents – had been found and seized by airport security police officers.
The 53-year-old businessman, who arrived from Shenzhen a few days ago, was on the way to take a Hainan-bound flight to return to the mainland.
When he arrived at the Chek Lap Kok airport at about 10.30am, he went for a smoke near a rubbish bin on the pavement outside the passenger terminal in Cheong Hong Road. “After taking a smoke, he went to the check-in counter on the departure hall but he left behind the bag on the ground,” a police officer said.
Meanwhile, two patrolling airport security officers found the bag contained a blue diamond and two new LG mobile phones. “After finding no suspicious items in the bag, our colleagues handed over the valuables to the airport’s security management unit,” the officer said.
About 15 minutes later, when the businessman realised he had left the valuables behind, he returned to the pavement to find the bag was gone and immediately alerted police.
After a few inquiries it was discovered that the bag had been found and handed in, and after a further questions the diamond and phones were returned to the relieved businessman.
