Policeman dies after jogging on hottest day of the year as temperature tips 34C

Weather warning as temperatures hit 34 degrees Celsius

An off-duty policeman died after he collapsed while jogging in Sai Kung during lunchtime today – the hottest day of the year so far in the city.

The incident happened less than an hour before the Hong Kong Observatory issued a very hot weather warning at 2.10pm.

The 45-year-old constable was jogging with a colleague at Sai Kung Tang Shiu Kin Sports Ground on Fuk Man Road when he collapsed.

“He felt dizzy while jogging and then he took a break,” a police spokeswoman said. “He passed out when he started jogging again.” His colleague immediately called for assistance.

The unconscious officer was taken to Tseung Kwan O Hospital but was declared dead before he reached the hospital, the spokeswoman said.

She added that there were no suspicious circumstances in the officer’s death.

The maximum temperature recorded at the Observatory in Tsim Sha Tsui this afternoon was 32.7 degrees Celsius.

At 1pm, 32 degrees was recorded in Sai Kung while temperatures reached 34 degrees in Tseung Kwan O, Happy Valley and Wong Tai Sin.

Hot weather prompted the Observatory to caution that “hot weather might cause adverse health effects.”

“The risk of heatstroke is high,” the Observatory said at 2.10pm. “When engaged in outdoor work or activities, drink plenty of water and avoid over exertion. If not feeling well, take a rest in the shade or cooler place as soon as possible.”

People were also advised to look after the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions. “If you know of them, call or visit them occasionally to check if they need any assistance,” the Observatory said.

The very hot weather warning was still in place at 4pm.

The weather is expected to remain mainly fine and hot over the next few days.
