The girl suffered multiple wounds to her head, neck and limbs in the attack and was resting comfortably after undergoing surgery at Prince of Wales Hospital, Sha Tin, last night.
Police said the attack took place in the 20th-floor flat the boy shared with his family in Wo Che Estate, Sha Tin, shortly after 2pm.
"We were told that they were doing revision inside the flat at the time of the incident," a police officer said. "Books and stationery were found on a table in the living room."
"The girl told our officers that he suddenly murmured to himself and then attacked her," a police source said.
Emergency services were called when the schoolboy, Lin Yiu-wai, was found lying unconscious outside Man Wo House on Hip Yan Street shortly after 2pm.
He was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.
A police spokeswoman said the girl "was in a semi-conscious state" when she was found in the living room of the flat. Police seized a meat cleaver, believed to have been used in the attack, from the flat's kitchen.
"An initial investigation shows both are Form Four students of a secondary school in the Sha Tin district and they are classmates but not young lovers," a police officer said.
He said no one else was inside the flat when the attack happened. "For now, it appears to be a wounding and suicide case," the officer said.
As the girl was unfit to be interviewed last night, he said, the trigger for the attack remained a mystery.
Police suspect the boy might have suffered from mental illness. There had not been any previous report of domestic violence involving the boy's family.
