Motorcyclist with learner's licence killed in crash with PLA jeep
Police say the biker, who held a learner's licence, veered into the wrong lane of traffic
A motorcyclist was killed yesterday after apparently losing control of his bike and ploughing into a People's Liberation Army jeep in Kam Tin, Yuen Long.
Officers said the motorcyclist, 26, held only a learner's driving licence and had failed to display the "L" plates at the front and rear of the bike.
The accident happened shortly after 8am when the rider, who was travelling along Route Twisk towards Pat Heung, lost control near Lui Kung Tin and collided with the jeep in the opposite lane.
"The motorcyclist was trapped under the car following the collision. He was unconscious," said Chief Inspector Simon Pang Chuen-kwong, of the New Territories North accident investigation team.
The man sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to Pok Oi Hospital, where he was confirmed dead at 8.44am.
Pang added that the motorcyclist was travelling with seven to eight others on motorbikes at the time. But he ruled out the possibility that they were racing.
"There is no evidence to suggest that there was illegal street racing," he said.
The police appealed to witnesses to come forward.
By law, new riders are allowed to ride unsupervised on city streets after they obtain a learner's driving licence. But they must display the "L" plates.
There were 48 fatal traffic collisions as of the end of July, according to police. Last year there was a total of 128.
