Some 86 per cent of parents surveyed said they had thought about international studies, putting the city fifth out of 15 territories in the international survey and well above the average score of 74 per cent.
Indonesia topped the list in the poll by London based market researcher Ipsos MORI, commissioned by HSBC, with 92 per cent, followed by Malaysia (88 per cent) and Turkey (87 per cent).
Mainland China was seventh with 85 per cent, Singapore ninth with 82 per cent, while Taiwan came tenth with 68 per cent.
About half of parents in two of the most popular destinations for overseas students had similar sentiments - 58 per cent in the US and 50 per cent in Britain. Australian parents showed the least interest. The survey also covered Brazil, Canada, France, India and Mexico.
Pollsters found that Australia was the most expensive destination. Average fees and living costs were HK$326,221 a year, followed by Singapore (HK$304,025), the US (HK$283,371) and the UK (HK$271,599).
