Green islands envisioned for disused Kai Tak airport runway, waterfront
The tip of the runway at the now-closed Kai Tak airport will transform into a series of green islands featuring sport and cultural activities if the government fully adopts a winning design announced yesterday.

The tip of the runway at the now-closed Kai Tak airport will transform into a series of green islands featuring sport and cultural activities if the government fully adopts a winning design announced yesterday.
The revamp, initiated in the government's policy address in 2013, aims to turn the runway tip and the Kwun Tong waterfront, across Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter, into an "edutainment" destination reflecting Kai Tak's aviation, maritime and transport history.
The top design came from a group of urban design master's degree students at the University of Hong Kong, among 80 entries received from around the world.
Jurors, led by Secretary for Development Paul Chan Mo-po, said the winning design was unique as it offered solutions for improving the quality of water surrounding the disused runway.
"It gives a natural treatment to the water's edge and it allows the water to be cleared naturally," juror and veteran architect Thom Bing-wing said.
