Fireman injured in Shek Kip Mei gas blast dies in hospital

A firefighter has died from injuries suffered in a gas explosion at a residential building in Shek Kip Mei last month.

Leung Kwok-kei sustained severe head injuries when he and eight colleagues were responding to a report of a gas smell inside Mei Ying House, Shek Kip Mei Estate, on November 22. All nine firefighters plus three members of the public were injured in the blast.

Leung had been treated in the intensive care unit at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung, but showed no signs of recovery.

Leung, who was 49, joined the Fire Services Department as a firefighter in September 1985, and was promoted to senior firefighter in March 2000, having served in various fire stations.

His last posting was at Mong Kok Fire Station, where he had served since his promotion to principal firefighter in March 2011.

Director of Fire Services David Lai Man-hin said he was deeply saddened by Leung's death.
