Boss of children's charity convicted of beating her adopted four-year-old son with a stick

The boss of a children's charity and recipient of a World Outstanding Chinese Award was yesterday given a 12-month probation order after being convicted of abusing her adopted four-year-old son.
Dr Nancy Chu Ping, chairwoman of the Nancy Chu Charitable Foundation, had pleaded guilty to three counts of ill-treating and neglecting a child in May and June.
The boy had told police that he was hit hard on the arms, legs, face and head, Eastern Court heard earlier.
But a report on Chu, 56, and her family gave a positive review, showing they had led a happy life since the abuse, Magistrate So Wai-tak noted yesterday.
Although the report did not suggest a probation order, the magistrate decided this was the most suitable punishment.
He told Chu that she could "learn the proper ways of teaching children".
Chu, clad in a black blazer, ducked behind her legal representative, who was carrying an umbrella as they left court on a drizzly morning.
