New open spaces along the Kwun Tong promenade will be available for the public to enjoy in two months, as part of an initiative to beautify the waterfront in the old industrial district.

Lying near high-rise factory and office buildings, the greenery and artistic decorations on the harbourfront stretching from Kwun Tong to Ngau Tau Kok make a stark contrast with the environment around them.

A 200-metre boardwalk had already been built in 2010, on a former facility for loading and unloading recycled paper.

There is also a 3,400 square metre site under a flyover at Hau Ming Street that has been used as an informal cultural venue since 2013.

As a second phase of the project, the promenade will soon be extended by 750 metres in the former Kwun Tong Public Cargo Working Area. The work there is scheduled to be completed by April.

Two more waterfront sites under the flyover, both near Lai Yip Street, will be changed into cultural venues under the government's Fly the Flyover project. A bigger one with an area of 3,350 square metres will become an open-air studio for artists, while a smaller one of 2,150 square metres will serve as a multipurpose public open space.
