An elderly man ran into a blazing flat to rescue his 91-year-old mother in Mong Kok, leading to both of their deaths yesterday in a fire authorities say started under suspicious circumstances.

The man, 61-year-old Yeung Wai-ming, and his wife, 60, were evacuated from their 13th-floor flat in the Cosmopolitan Centre, Nathan Road, shortly after 11.30pm on Tuesday, when Yeung's mother's home - on the 12th floor of the same building - burst into flames.

He went straight to the 12th floor to find his mother, Tsin Sin, who lived alone, police said.

An initial fire department investigation indicated there were suspicious circumstances around the cause of the fire, according to police, who did not elaborate. The Mong Kok district crime squad is investigating.

A neighbour, who awoke to shouts, said he saw Yeung in the public corridor when he went to check on the commotion.
