Police will this week ramp up efforts to catch illegal road racers ahead of the Easter holidays with a series of operations targeting hotspots where thrill seekers gather.

About six areas where drivers are known to meet at night will be under increased surveillance in an attempt to curb road racing incidents, which typically surge during holiday periods.

"Whenever you get a public holiday, we get a spike in complaints," said a police officer with knowledge of the operations. "It's noisy, it's dangerous and invariably it will impact the public."

The operations come after six cars were impounded last weekend and the drivers questioned for suspected road racing near Container Port Road South, the same area where two young Cathay Pacific pilots were killed earlier this month in a horrific road accident.

Police investigating the double fatality in the early hours of Friday, March 13, say speed was the key contributing factor in the crash that claimed the lives of Michael Tam Shiu-cheung, 28, and Ian Wong Yik, 27.

The pair were killed when their Porsche sports car spun out of control and crashed into a flyover before bursting into flames near the container terminal in Kwai Chung just after 4.30am.

It is understood the car was travelling at almost three times the speed limit of 50km/h.
