Storms expected to continue with voters warned to prepare for election day soaking

The first day of school in the city will open with rough weather, which will last through Sunday’s polls

Voters are advised to bring an umbrella to the Legislative Council polls this weekend, with this morning’s amber storm warning expected to be the start of six straight days of rain.

The amber warning was raised at 6.55am and taken down just 50 minutes later. A thunderstorm warning will remain effective until 2pm.

It came after the Transport Department reminded students returning to school to leave home early as traffic was expected to be heavier than normal.

Major public transport operators have also been reminded to provide adequate services to keep up with commuter volumes on the first day of school, according to the department.

Cooler days ahead were expected with temperatures ranging from 26 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The air quality for Thursday was forecast to range from low to moderate. People with existing heart or respiratory illnesses should consider reducing physical activities outdoors.

The rainy weather was not expected to improve until after September 6.

The Observatory said an active southwestern air stream would bring heavy showers and thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days.

A trough of low pressure was also expected to linger over the northern part of the South China Sea and the South China coast over the weekend and early next week, causing rough weather.
