10-year-old Hong Kong chef set to receive first ‘Cordons Bleus’ child title in Asia

A 10-year-old Hong Kong boy is set to become the first in Asia to be awarded a French culinary title today.
Chan Ka-lum will get his "Cordons Bleus" medal for child chefs from Commanderie des Cordons Bleus de France, a culinary group first founded in France which takes pride in advocating protection of local food culture.
The medal presentation takes place tonight at French restaurant La Saison, hosted by the group’s president for the Far East and Pacific, Cassam Gooljarry.
“I’m very excited. I will be wearing a suit, and this is the first time I get to receive a title,” the boy told the South China Morning Post over the phone.
His father Chan Chun-sun, who is the founder of spicy Yunnan noodle chain Sing Lum Khui, said the medal, however, was slightly different from the one handed to adult chefs.
The father, who has an adult medal of his own, said chefs who had the title could recommend their children as long as they pledged to the association that they would pass on their cooking skills to their children.
