MTR train rolls back giving Hong Kong passengers a fright

An MTR train that unexpectedly “rolled back” gave passengers at Tai Wai station a scare, making them think it was leaving before the doors had closed, the MTR Corporation said last night.

A spokesperson said the East Rail train rolled back about one metre after its braking system malfunctioned as it switched from emergency to normal mode.

“Under normal circumstances, the train should not have rolled back. We later discovered that the platform was sloping gently, which might have explained what happened.

The incident happened when passengers were getting off after they were told in an announcement that they should take the next train, the spokesperson said.

The Hung Hom-bound train was sent to a depot for inspection.

The MTRC apologised to affected passengers and said an investigation was under way to find out the cause of the incident.

The East Rail line is prone to delays or disruptions.

On May 18, about 600 commuters were evacuated from a Lo Wu-bound train after smoke was seen coming from the bottom of a carriage as it pulled into Mong Kok East station. The smoke came from a wheel which was not running smoothly, an MTR spokeswoman said. There were no injuries.
