A member of the agency that administers public examinations in Hong Kong has resigned after media reports that he had told a pupil with him he allegedly had an affair her results before they were officially released.

Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority secretary-general Dr Tong Chong-sze today confirmed that the unnamed member, understood to be a married vice-principal of a secondary school, had quit because of the issue.

Based on online chat messages allegedly sent between the two that went viral, Chinese-language media reported that the vice-principal had had an affair with a Form Six girl at his school.

The messages suggested they had discussed sex and having a baby. They also suggested the vice-principal had told the girl the possible score she could get for maths in the Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, based on information he obtained from the authority.

Tong sought to play down the impact of the possible leak of the result.
