Man critical after saving dog from Causeway Bay fire: 70 residents evacuated, exploding heater to blame

A 58-year-old man was fighting for his life in hospital on Wednesday morning, after a heater burst into flames in his Hong Kong apartment.
One of his pet dogs, a Shetland sheepdog, was killed in the incident and the other – a Golden Retriever – was injured and was under observation at the Wan Chai office of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
About 70 residents were evacuated from Florida Mansion on Cleveland Street, Causeway Bay, when the blaze broke out in the sixth-floor flat shortly before 5am.
The tenant, surnamed Ng, was woken by choking smoke when the heater burst into flames in his flat, according to police.
“He woke up and tried to fight the blaze but failed and then he ran out of the flat,” a police spokeswoman said.
It is understood he ran out of the flat with his two dogs, but the sheepdog ran upstairs and he carried the Golden Retriever to the ground level.
