Three Hong Kong students have struck the right notes to take top prizes at an internationally acclaimed music festival in Wales.

Elise Liu Chi-man and Sabrina Chan Hiu-yui won in the young international musician and open folk solo instrumental categories and Rachel Ng Shuk-ching in the under-16 vocal solo category at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod – an Eisteddfod is a traditional Welsh music festival.

The teenagers travelled to North Wales to participate in the 70th Eisteddfod, an event that dates back to 1947, when it was founded to promote international peace and harmony in the wake of the second world war.

Over the years, music scene heavyweights such as Burt Bacharach, Lulu and the late Luciano Pavarotti have performed in the town of Llangollen, with the festival attracting thousands of performers and visitors.

Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association spokeswoman Wendy Lam said Liu and Chan had competed against other young musicians in order to represent the group in Wales.

She said: “Both students had to go through a very tough qualifying process to make the trip, so they have already been winners back at home. It’s been well worth it, and we have enjoyed it at Llangollen.”
