The New Year was rung in with the tiny cries of a boy and a girl at two Hong Kong hospitals as the city welcomed the arrival of 2017.

The first baby, a boy, was born at the stroke of midnight to Sun Chi-fai and Tsang Sze-wing at Hong Kong Baptist Hospital in Kowloon Tong.

Speaking at her bedside on Sunday, the first-time mother said she hoped the couple’s newborn son could grow up happy and healthy.

The pair had yet to choose a name for the boy, who weighed 3.15kg.

Sun, an office worker, said he hoped Hong Kong could become a better place as their son grew up.
