University of Hong Kong slips one place in latest Asian rankings
HKU comes in fifth, joining four other local universities in top 20, according to Times Higher Education list; Singapore and mainland Chinese institutions beat it
The University of Hong Kong has slipped one more place in a recently released ranking of Asian universities, with two Singapore and two mainland institutions ahead of it.
But there was some good news for the city with five of six featured universities making the top 20 in the latest Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings, up from four last year.
Joining HKU in the top 10 is the University of Science and Technology, which remained in sixth place.
Chinese University edged up two places to 11th, while City University rose to 12th from 16th. Polytechnic University ranked 17th, up from 22nd last year, while Baptist University dropped five places to 49th.
On HKU and Baptist University’s dip, Times Higher Education rankings editor Phil Baty said: “This occurred despite the fact the overall scores for both institutions increased, meaning that other institutions improved at a faster rate.”
“Despite these small declines, Hong Kong’s performance is impressive given that it has a population of just over seven million and it is one of the top-performing territories in the table relative to its wealth and population. Almost a quarter [23 per cent] of university-aged people in Hong Kong are enrolled in one of its six featured universities – a proportion beaten only by Turkey and Macao.”
For the second year running, the National University of Singapore topped the ranking, while another institution from the city, Nanyang Technological University, took fourth spot.
For the first time, two mainland universities surpassed HKU, with Peking and Tsinghua universities ranked second and third respectively.
Universities are judged for their teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
