Five passengers injured in Hong Kong ferry crash

Vessel from Central to Discovery Bay smashed a row of glass windows as it was about to moor

Five people were injured when a ferry crashed into Discovery Bay Ferry Pier on Monday night.

The ferry carrying about 300 passengers departed from Central at 8pm. Upon arrival at Lantau Island, it smashed a row of glass windows at Discovery Bay Ferry Pier on Plaza Lane when it was about to moor at about 8.40pm.

Damage to the bow was clearly visible.

A woman complaining of neck pain was seen being helped to sit down before she was taken to North Lantau Hospital.

Others who had been injured did not ask for treatment at the site.

Passenger Stephen Robertson said he was thrown about 10 feet on impact and came to a stop colliding with other passengers.

The Discovery Bay resident said the ferry was busy with some 300 passengers on board. He recalled hearing a big bang when the glass windows were smashed.

He was not injured.

“The impact caught me by surprise and I accelerated to my left and hit another passenger and then another and all of us slid down the aisle till we came to a stop,” he said.

Robertson saw the woman who was taken to hospital gingerly holding her neck, taking care not to move her head. She looked to be in pain and in shock, he said.

Media reports later stated the number of passengers as 285.

The Marine Department said the incident might be related to a faulty engine and it was following up the matter.
