Five Hong Kong celebrity mums who had children later in life
As more Hong Kong women delay starting a family, City Weekend looks at the celebrity mums having babies after making their name.
Supermodel Kathy Chow Man-kei
Chow was 41 when she had her first child, Jacques, in July 2015 with French husband Julien Lepeu. A few weeks before she gave birth, she displayed her bump during a revealing photo shoot. She gave birth to her second son in March 2017. Friends have reportedly told Chow to try for a girl, but she expressed a wish to let things happen “naturally”.
Actress and Canto-pop singer Miriam Yeung Chin-wah
Yeung and her husband Real Ting Chi-ko welcomed the arrival of their son Torres “RMB” Ting in June 2012, when Yeung was 38. Torres was named after Spanish footballer Fernando Torres. Shortly after the birth, Yeung spoke about the societal pressure to lose the weight she gained in pregnancy, which she jokingly blamed on her husband.
Canto-pop singer and actress Kelly Chen Wai-lam
Chen had her first son Chace Lau in July 2009, when she was 36, and second son Riley Lau in March 2012 when she was 39. She lost her twin girls by miscarriage in 2011. Her husband is long term partner, businessman Alex Lau Kin-ho.
Canto-pop singer Kay Tse
The Wedding Invitation Street singer had her second child, Karina, by caesarean section at the age of 40 in March this year. She already has one child, son James born in 2007, with fellow singer Louis Cheung. After Karina’s birth, Louis gushed with praise for his wife during an interview with the media. He told journalists he could not imagine watching Kay face the pain of a third childbirth and even jokingly offered to deliver their third child if science has enabled male pregnancies by then.
Celebrity manager Mani Fok
On Mother’s Day 2013, the 44-year-old agent for Hong Kong singer Nicholas Tse Ting-fung revealed she secretly had a two-year-old daughter Honey sometime in 2011, when she was either 37 or 38. She said she did not want to disclose the identity of the father, but simply stated that they “weren’t compatible” and he had “taken responsibility” for the child.
