A dump truck caught fire in Hong Kong’s shopping district of Causeway Bay on Thursday, resulting in dark smoke billowing across a busy street.

Photos posted online in the afternoon showed that a truck on Paterson Street was on fire, producing a large column of black smoke that drew a crowd of onlookers.

The fire was so fierce that the vehicle was reportedly reduced to a charred frame.

Police said they received a call at 2.28pm about the blaze involving a car with a person trapped inside.

The blaze was listed as a No 1 alarm fire and extinguished by 2.42pm.

In Hong Kong, fires are rated on a scale of one to five according to their seriousness.

The force confirmed the truck was not carrying any explosive materials.
