‘Wo Shing Wo triad leader’ among 38 arrested in series of Hong Kong police raids

Alleged triad leader arrested in police raids

An alleged Wo Shing Wo triad leader was among 41 suspects arrested in a series of police raids yesterday in a crackdown on gangs that recruit teenagers.

The man, known in underworld circles as Fei Kin, or "Fat Kin", is one of four alleged Wo Shing Wo leaders.

He was picked up at his home in Sha Tin at about 5am, a police source said.

Another core Wo Shing Wo member and former leader, known as "Sheung Ying", was arrested in the New Territories.

The 39 men and two women, all Hongkongers aged 15 to 56, were arrested when more than 150 officers searched multiple locations after a months-long investigation by undercover police.

Most of those arrested are suspected members of the Wo Shing Wo or Sun Yee On triads.

Police believe the operation, codenamed "Citywalker", has dealt a heavy blow to the triad factions.

"Evidence collected during the operation shows the suspects and their associates were believed to have been involved in 125 offences, mostly triad-related," one police source said.

The source said the offences included drug trafficking, unlawful assembly, recruitment of people into a triad society and claiming to be a triad member. A small quantity of illegal drugs was confiscated during the operation.

Undercover officers infiltrated the triad factions and gathered evidence and intelligence about six months ago.

Among those arrested were seven secondary school pupils, said Superintendent Ho Chun-chung of the New Territories South regional crime squad.

But he stressed "there is no evidence of triad infiltration into schools".

He said the investigation was continuing and it was possible more arrests would follow.
