A former chief editor of Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao narrowly avoided being followed by two unknown men a day before he suffered a knife attack in Sai Wan Ho last year, the High Court heard yesterday.

Closed-circuit television footage pieced together details of how the pair watched and later lost journalist Kevin Lau Chun-to, 50, the day before he was slashed in broad daylight.

At 9.24am on February 25, defendant Yip Kim-wah's car appeared in Kowloon Tong, and two people alighted, prosecutor Nicholas Adams said.

The pair walked to Devon Road, where they got on a motorcycle a few minutes later and stopped at La Salle Road, where Lau lived.

Lau left home in his car at 10.44am, and a minute later the motorbike drove past his place. It continued on to the Eastern Harbour Tunnel and arrived in Tai Hong Street at about 11am.
