A woman accused her husband of having a mistress, then poured corrosive drain cleaner over him in their Kwai Chung home yesterday, less than 24 hours after she called police for help during a row over their relationship.

The 57-year-old construction worker was critically ill last night after the attack, in which the wife and their son were also injured.

Officers were sent to investigate after her call at about 10.45am on Sunday but left when the couple calmed down.

Yesterday's attack happened at about 6.15am when the man returned home to Shek Kwong House in Shek Lei (II) Estate after playing mahjong. It is understood the woman accused him of having a mistress.

"In the middle of the dispute, the woman poured drain cleaner over her husband," a police source said. "Acid was also splashed on her and their son who tried to mediate."

The father suffered burns to his head, body and limbs and was taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam. His wife, a 53-year-old cleaner, suffered burns to her limbs and body and was treated at Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei. She was arrested for wounding and was in stable condition. Their son was treated for leg injuries and discharged from Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung.

The source said: "Police had received three other reports of domestic dispute involving the couple earlier this year and their case had been referred to the Social Welfare Department."

The department said social workers contacted the couple last month and tried unsuccessfully to meet them this month. A spokeswoman said social workers would offer help to the family.
