A foreign domestic helper was arrested for alleged cruelty to her employer’s two-year-old daughter, Hong Kong police said.

A foreign domestic helper was arrested yesterday for alleged cruelty to her employer’s two-year-old daughter, Hong Kong police said.

The arrest of the woman, 33, was made after her employer, a 34-year-old woman, found red marks on her daughter’s face at home in Tsun King Road, Sha Tin and called police at about 9.30pm last night.

“After investigation, the domestic helper was arrested on suspicion of cruelty to a child. The girl was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment,” police said.

The helper was released on bail pending further investigation and had not been charged, according to police. She must report to police next month.

Detectives from Sha Tin police district are investigating.

Figures from the Social Welfare Department show there were 385 new cases of child abuse reported in the first six months of this year.

Some 62 per cent of abusers were parents of the victims and 11 per cent of abusers were caregivers, according to the figures.

Statistics showed that 51 per cent of the 385 cases involved physical abuse.

There were 856 cases of child abuse reported last year, about 12.5 per cent down on the figure of 963 for 2013.
