Police are hunting for five members of a smash-and-grab gang after they made off with more than HK$2 million worth of handbags from a store in a Hong Kong shopping mall during a three-minute raid on Friday.

Carrying a sledgehammer and four large grey shopping bags, the five culprits smashed their way into the Vogue Station on the first floor of Nina Tower in Yeung Uk Road, Tsuen Wan at about 6.30am, according to police.

Initial investigations showed the men mainly targeted high-end Hermes bags, a police source said.

“They snatched more than 20 Hermes handbags along with several handbags from two other brands from four to five cabinets,” the source said.

“The raid lasted two to three minutes. After they ran out of the shop, they ran to the rear staircases of the mall and then disappeared.”

The source believes they were from a “professional” gang, saying that it was possible they might have reconnoitred the area before the raid.

“They struck when security guards were in the middle of changing shift and fewer guards were on patrol,” he said.
