Hong Kong court makes committal order on double-murder suspect’s extradition to US

Chief executive to decide when Shi Deyun, wanted for spousal assault and killing of his two nephews in California, will be handed over to American government

The judicial stage of a double-murder suspect’s extradition concluded on Thursday as the court made a formal committal order to await the chief executive’s decision on when he should be handed to the United States government.

Shi Deyun, 44, appeared at the Eastern Court on Thursday morning to sign three sets of documents: his formal consent to surrender, the committal order and the disposal order.

The Chinese national slouched against the bars of the defendants’ dock as an interpreter translated the English proceedings into putonghua.

Magistrate Jason Wan Siu-ming said: “Upon the consent of Mr Deyun Shi, the court formally makes the order of committal.

“The chief executive will decide when you should be handed to the government of the United States. But you still have the right to object ... to make an application that you should not be removed,” Wan said.

Shi is wanted by the US government for spousal assault and the murder of his two teenage nephews at their Arcadian home in Los Angeles in late January.

He was provisionally arrested on January 24 at the Hong Kong International Airport, a day after he left California just hours following the alleged crimes.
