‘I did great harm to my family’, Hong Kong man accused of raping his maid tells court

But retired father maintains his Filipino domestic worker consented to sex

A retired father accused of raping a long-serving domestic helper and threatening to throw her out a window said he had hurt his family’s feelings, the High Court heard on Tuesday.

In a video-recorded interview with police that aired in court, Lee Man-biu, 66, said he was filled with remorse.

“I did great harm to my family. A man of sixty-plus years was caught in something like this,” he said in a choked voice.

Lee allegedly dragged his Filipino domestic worker of nine years – identified in court as X – to a bedroom in his Sham Tseng flat and raped her on October 13, 2014. He was later charged with two counts of indecent assault and one of rape.

He also allegedly threatened to throw his maid out a window if she told anyone what happened.

The defendant maintained his innocence, saying X consented.

He added X could have resisted him when the alleged offence took place.

“I’m more than 60 years old. She is 40-plus. She could have put up strong resistance and left bruises on my body,” said Lee.

The defendant allegedly offered the woman HK$500, which he told police was payment for a sexual service she offered.

Lee said he did not want his intimate relationship with the woman to be revealed to his wife and daughter, who both mostly stayed on the mainland.

He told police her attitude changed after they had sex.

The trial continues before Madam Justice Esther Toh Lye-ping.
