Lam Wing-kee’s son stole some of the limelight from his father on Tuesday by travelling across the border and entering the mainland without incident.

In a cryptic online message, Phoenix Lam shared his assessment that mainland authorities were operating “in accordance with the law”.

The older of Lam’s two sons, aged around 30, revealed his move in a Facebook post four days after his father made explosive claims about his abduction and eight months of detention by a special central investigative unit.

“No one was stalking me ... and I wasn’t disturbed,” he said.

“My successful trip proved that Beijing is ruling the country in accordance with the law, and in a civilised and open manner. It would not detain people irrelevant to the [Causeway Bay] bookstore incident.”

He added that he had never attempted to challenge or test any government, insisting he travelled to the mainland only for legal business needs.
