Hong Kong police will consider obtaining CCTV footage from immigration officers at the Lo Wu checkpoint to find out more about two men, said to be mainland agents, monitoring bookseller Lam Wing-kee when he returned home after eight months in detention, the Post has learned.

Details of the investigation came as Lam gave a statement at the police headquarters yesterday, nearly two weeks after the Causeway Bay Books manager gave an explosive account of his ordeal in two mainland cities as a result of his mailing books critical of the top communist leadership around the country.

Meanwhile, Beijing has formally agreed to meet Hong Kong officials in the capital to discuss how to improve the mechanism mainland authorities are obliged to use when notifying the city that its residents are detained over the border.

Lam’s case sparked widespread fears as his treatment by the mainland was seen as a violation of freedom of speech.

Lam, speaking after two hours of meetings with police, said he had little faith in the Beijing move.
