Two held by police after woman dies in knife attack at Tai Kok Tsui

A 66-year-old man is alleged to have killed his wife during a dispute over money

Hong Kong police arrested two people on Saturday night after a man allegedly killed his wife with a knife during a dispute in Tai Kok Tsui.

At around 7pm, a 66-year-old man, surnamed Kwan, reportedly stabbed his wife, 46, in the chest, in their apartment in Glorydays Building on Wai On Street.

The woman was found unconscious without a pulse when police officers arrived. The man suffered injuries to his hands.

“We found a one-foot-long knife in the apartment but with no blood stains on it,” Terry Law Kwok-hoi, assistant commander of Mong Kok district crime unit, said.

“We do not rule out that someone had cleaned the knife with water, as it was found in the washroom.”

The woman was certified dead shortly after the pair were sent to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for treatment.

Police also arrested the 57-year-old sister-in-law of the deceased woman, who lives in the same flat as the couple. An officer found blood stains on the sister-in-law’s clothing.

Law said the couple had a record of domestic violence, and had been fighting over money before the incident took place.

In June, the pair got into a fight as Kwan was trying to stop his wife from looking for jobs. She suffered injuries to her hands.

The case was transferred to a social worker, but the couple turned down any assistance.

An investigation by the Mong Kok district crime unit was under way.

Last Sunday, a 60-year-old man jumped into Victoria Harbour in an apparent suicide attempt after allegedly strangling his wife to death at their To Kwa Wan home during an argument over their relationship.

In the first half of the year, the number of homicide cases surged by 36.4 per cent year on year to reach 15.
