Cyclist hit and killed by minibus in Sheung Shui, driver arrested

Police block section of Fan Kam Road after deadly accident

A cyclist was killed this morning after being hit by a minibus in Sheung Shui.

The crash happened at 6.53am on Fan Kam Road when the route 18 red minibus travelling along Fan Kam Road towards Pat Heung, Yuen Long hit the 54-year-old male victim, when approaching North District Hospital.

The victim surnamed Chau, who was reportedly hurled 12 metres on impact, was confirmed dead at 7.16am after being rushed to North District Hospital for serious head injuries, according to police.

Police blocked off the section of Fan Kam Road towards Yuen Long. Blood stains could reportedly be seen at the site of the accident and the victim’s bicycle was laying on the road when police arrived.

The minibus driver, 55, passed a breathalyser test and has been arrested for causing death by dangerous driving.

Investigations are continuing into whether the minibus was driving at excessive speed and if the victim was following traffic light instructions.

Police urged anyone who witnessed the accident or with any information to contact the investigating officers at 3661 3800.
