Eight hurt in chemical spill at Hong Kong lab

One victim had direct contact with chemical waste; seven others did not but complained of feeling unwell

Eight people were injured in a suspected chemical spill at a laboratory in Tai Po Industrial Estate on Tuesday morning.

A department spokeswoman said police received a call at 11.34am claiming chemical material had exploded at the site.

Emergency crew were sent to the second-floor lab on Dai Fu Street.

“One man suffered injuries to the face and ear,” the spokeswoman said.

A government spokeswoman said initial investigations showed no explosion occurred, adding that the fire department was treating the case as a “hazardous material” incident.
