Manhunt in Hong Kong for four suspects after mainland visitor slashed in the leg in HK$4 million daylight robbery
Suspects, believed to be South Asian, took off with backpack and luggage containing foreign currencies after allegedly attacking man on footbridge
Police were yesterday searching for four non-Chinese men after a mainland visitor was slashed and robbed of about HK$4 million in foreign currency during a brazen daylight hold-up.
The robbery, which has been described by police sources as a pre-planned ambush, took place on the Chi Cheong Road footbridge at about 8.30am shortly after the mainland man in his 40s got off at Sheung Shui MTR station following his arrival from Shenzhen by train. The bridge is just a few minutes’ walk from the station.
“Four robbers were witnessed surrounding the victim on the footbridge and one of them was seen holding a knife,” a police source said.
He said initial investigations showed the culprits, who were all wearing caps, initially tried to snatch the bags from the mainland man.
“The victim was slashed near the left ankle when he apparently put up a struggle,” the source said, adding that the hold-up lasted about 10 seconds before the robbers fled with the bags down the footbridge outside Sheung Shui Centre.
“We were told the backpack and suitcase carried more than US$400,000 (HK$3.1 million) and about 80,000 euros (HK$649,000) in total,” he said.
