A man was arrested following a citywide manhunt yesterday, over allegations he sexually assaulted a seven-year-old boy at a community centre in Sau Mau Ping over the weekend.

The boy was alone when he met the suspect in Shun Chi Street near Shun Lee Estate on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

A source said the suspect claimed to know the boy’s grandmother and took him to a nearby community centre. “The boy was indecently assaulted at the rear staircase,” the source said.

The boy returned home and told his family what had happened and they sought the help of a social worker.

Police launched a manhunt for the suspect after receiving a referral from a government department on Monday.

The man was described as thin and aged about 44 with short, grey hair.

He was wearing a grey T-shirt, black track jacket, dark trousers and white sports shoes, and carrying a shoulder bag at the time of the alleged incident.

Yesterday, police made a public appeal urging parents to pay attention to the safety of their children and to stay alert.
