Investigators are trying to identify a man who was found burned to death in a fire at a subdivided flat in Tsuen Wan.

About 200 residents of Kam Shing Building on Heung Wo Street ran for their lives as the blaze broke out in the first-floor unit at about 6.40pm on Thursday.

Firefighters brought 11 residents to safety.

They put out the fire at 7.15pm and found the charred body of the man in the two metre by four metre cubicle, one of nine that the flat had been split into.

A man running an automotive parts shop nearby said thick black smoke billowed out from a back alley and many people yelled “fire.”

An explosion was heard, and some neighbours said there had been more than one “bang.”

No other injuries were reported.
