Elderly Hong Kong woman dies after being hit by truck

Incident marks city’s third fatal traffic accident in nine days

An elderly woman died instantly when she was knocked down by a truck in Sau Mau Ping on Wednesday.

The accident happened outside Sau Yee House at Sau Mau Ping Estate off Sau Ming Road shortly before 12.30pm.

“The victim was hit by a truck and certified dead at the scene,” a police spokeswoman said.

The area was cordoned off during lunchtime as police investigated. Officers from the Kowloon East traffic unit are handling the case.

This was the third fatal traffic accident in the city in nine days. Last Tuesday, a truck driver, 57, died in a four-vehicle pile-up in Fanling. Last Wednesday, an elderly woman died after being hit by a truck in Tuen Mun.

Police figures show 132 people died in 129 road traffic accidents across the city last year, up from 122 deaths in 117 accidents in 2015. In 2014, 100 people died in 99 fatal traffic accidents.
