Wo Shing Wo triad boss among 151 arrested in raids across Hong Kong
Three former suspected gang leaders also held after months-long undercover investigation
The suspected Wo Shing Wo triad leader was among 151 people arrested in a series of raids across the city on Friday after a months-long investigation by undercover police.
The man known in underworld circles as Tsuen Chai was picked up when officers raided his Fanling home shortly after midnight.
A police source said three former gang leaders, nicknamed Fei Kin, Po Ming and Sha Tan Tseuk, were also nabbed in the operation.
It is understood police also arrested two high-ranking members of the Sun Yee On and 14K triad societies, known as Ka Lok and Wah Hei.
The six Hongkongers were among 100 men and 51 women rounded up in the early hours when more than 400 officers raided over 50 locations across the city, including pubs in Tsim Sha Tsui and Yau Ma Tei and flats.
The source said the youngest suspect was a 16-year-old schoolboy who was arrested for acting as a triad member.
Superintendent Tan Wing-cheung of Kowloon West regional crime unit said the suspects were arrested for various offences such as unlawful assembly, wounding, serious assault, drug trafficking, and claiming or acting to be a triad member.
He believed operation “Jadecutter” had dealt a “heavy blow” to several gangs active in West Kowloon. The operation was continuing and further arrests were expected.
Tan said undercover agents were deployed months ago to infiltrate triad gangs, identify core figures and gather intelligence.
Police closed down seven unlicensed pubs in Yau Ma Tei during the raids and seized 31 weapons, including 12 knives, seven extendable batons and four knuckledusters, and confiscated a small quantity of illegal drugs.
Reports of triad-related crime rose 3.3 per cent last year to 1,872, from 1,812 in 2015.
