Domestic helper arrested for stealing HK$30,000 in women’s clothing from Repulse Bay house
Suspect spotted acting suspiciously outside building by a security guard, who called police
A domestic helper was arrested on suspicion of stealing 50 pieces of clothing from her female employer at a luxury house in Repulse Bay on Monday.
The incident came to light shortly after 9am when the Filipino worker, 41, was found carrying a nylon bag and acting suspiciously outside the Repulse Bay Road house by a security guard, who called police.
Repulse Bay is one of the city’s luxury residential areas.
Officers arrived at the scene and intercepted the woman.
“After an initial investigation, she was suspected of stealing 50 pieces of clothing worth about HK$30,000,” a police spokesman said. The helper was then arrested.
A police source said all the items were women’s clothing and officers were still investigating whether they were stolen to be sold.
As of Monday afternoon, the woman was still being held for questioning at Western Police Station and had not been charged. Officers from the station were handling the case.
Police figures show there were 25,628 reports of theft across the city last year, a 6.8 per cent fall compared to 27,512 in 2015.
