A woman was in a coma on Monday afternoon after firefighters smashed down the door of a burning flat and rescued her at a public housing estate in Sha Tin, police said.

The woman lost consciousness while being taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment, according to a force spokeswoman.

The fire started shortly before noon, in an eighth-floor flat at Pok Man House in Pok Hong Estate. A security guard called emergency services at 11.28am.

About 100 residents fled the building, according to police. Firefighters broke through the door of the burning flat and rescued the woman, who was trapped inside.

“The woman was in a semi-conscious state while being rescued,” the spokeswoman said. “She once regained consciousness, but she later fell into a coma.”
