Search launched for Hong Kong ambulanceman who went missing on diving trip

Officer, 53, was with four friends at Waglan Island, off Hong Kong Island

A search was launched for an off-duty ambulanceman who went missing during a dive near Waglan Island on Tuesday night.

The 53-year-old officer, who has been with the Fire Services Department for more than 20 years, was diving with four friends but failed to return to their boat at Waglan Island, part of the Po Toi Islands cluster south-east of Hong Kong Island.

His friends contacted the Hong Kong authorities for assistance. Officers from the police, fire and marine departments launched a search, but it had yielded no results as of Wednesday night.

The search was temporarily halted but was set to resume on Thursday morning.

The missing officer is stationed at Fanling Fire Station and is due to retire in about a year. He is unmarried.

His niece told the media her uncle had notified her on Tuesday morning that he was at Pak Sha Wan Public Pier in Sai Kung for a diving tour of the South China Sea oil platform, which is about three hours away. She said she learned about his disappearance at about midnight.
