Motorcyclist pinned under car dies in three-vehicle tunnel crash in Hong Kong
The accident led to a Sha Tin-bound traffic jam stretching back 3km to Kowloon Bay
A three-vehicle collision in Tate’s Cairn Tunnel killed one motorcyclist and disrupted Sha Tin-bound traffic for more than two hours on Friday morning in Hong Kong.
The crash occurred at 9.43am and involved a motorcycle, a taxi and a car, according to police.
“Initial information showed the motorcyclist was trapped under a car and had to be freed by firemen,” a police spokeswoman said.
The man was taken unconscious to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, where he was later certified dead.
She said police arrested the driver of the car in connection with the incident.
The Transport Department said the fast lane of the Sha Tin-bound tunnel was closed to traffic following the accident, causing long queues.
At 11am, chief transport officer Kwong Ka-yin from the Transport Department said the traffic jam had backed up about 3km to Kowloon Bay.
Police said the tunnel was reopened before noon.
Latest figures show 59 people died in 57 fatal traffic accidents across the city in the first six months of this year.
