Hong Kong police’s eight-hour hunt ends with arrest of man thought to have attacked stepfather with a meat cleaver
About 40 officers from Police Tactical Unit join local patrol officers to comb Wong Tai Sin estate
Scores of police officers scoured a public housing estate in Wong Tai Sin for eight hours on Wednesday morning, looking for and eventually arresting a man accused of attacking his stepfather, only one year his senior, with a meat cleaver.
The attack took place in the Wang Leung House flat at Wang Tau Hom Estate on Fu Mei Street, at about 2.15am when the victim, a visitor from the mainland, was asleep. His wife, who is in her 50s, was not at home.
Police said they got a call from a female security guard when the victim, 37, ran downstairs from the flat with knife wounds to his shoulder, and collapsed in the building’s ground-floor lift lobby.
The alleged attacker, 36, left the crime scene before officers arrived. Police said he wore slippers and shorts and was unarmed when he left home.
About 40 officers from the Police Tactical Unit were sent to search for him, along with local patrol officers.
Soon after 10am, the suspect was picked up on the street on the same housing estate, according to a police spokeswoman.
She said a cleaver and a fruit knife were seized at the flat, and the victim was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Before lunchtime, the suspect was still being held at Wong Tai Sin Police Station for questioning, and had not been charged.
It was understood the man suffered with mental illness for about 10 years and was discharged from a mental hospital earlier this year.
