Police, firefighters and a government helicopter were searching on Monday morning for a man who went missing while hiking alone in a Hong Kong country park.

The 53-year-old set off into Plover Cove Country Park, in the city’s northeast, on Sunday afternoon.

The search, involving a Government Flying Service helicopter, police, and officers from the Fire Services and Civil Aid Service, began in Monday’s early hours after the man’s wife reported him missing.

The woman, also 53, told police her husband had headed to Cheung Pai Tun.

“His family made a fruitless search and failed to contact him through different channels before making a report to police,” a police spokeswoman said.

She said the report was made to police soon before 1.30am on Monday.
