A four-year-old girl was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of a Hong Kong hospital on Friday night after she was found suffering bleeding in the brain and multiple bruises on her body.

Police arrested her nanny, 36, and the nanny’s girlfriend, 41, at a guest house in Mong Kok on suspicion of abusing the girl. As of Friday night, the two were being held for questioning and had not been charged.

Officers from the Kowloon West child abuse investigation unit were handling the case.

The girl and her twin sister were sent to the nanny to be looked after in a Mong Kok flat on November 22 as their mother was busy moving to a new home in Hung Hom. The sister suffered no injury and was handed back to her mother two days later.

The child abuse came to light when the mother was asked to pick up the injured daughter on Friday.

The girl was in a semi-conscious state and suffering multiple bruises when her mother arrived at about 9am, police said. The mother immediately took her to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei to seek medical treatment.
