Hong Kong man ‘murdered father with meat cleaver after dispute over money’
Police and paramedics called to flat in Mong Kok just after 5pm on Sunday
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his 49-year-old father with a meat cleaver following a dispute about money at their Mong Kok flat.
Police and paramedics were called to the property on Canton Road just after 5pm on Sunday following a report about an injured man.
Chung Chi-ming, assistant Mong Kok district commander, said the Nepali man was found unconscious and had sustained multiple injuries to the head and legs.
He was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei and died just after 1am on Monday.
The man’s eldest son, 32, was arrested at around 10pm after an investigation showed he had tried to borrow money from his father, leading to a dispute, Chung said on Monday morning.
“We believe he used a meat cleaver to attack his father. The flat showed signs of a fight and was full of blood, which we believe belonged to the father.”
The son worked as a construction worker and lived in the property with his father. Police seized the knife they believed was used in the incident.
The man, 83, suffered serious injuries to his head and hand after a suspected dispute about “family issues”.
The number of murder cases recorded last year in Hong Kong stood at 24, down from the 28 in 2016. Reports of wounding and serious assault also fell last year, by 8.2 per cent to 4,611.
