Hong Kong’s chief executive calls for preservation and spread of Chinese culture in Lunar New Year message

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has put the focus on the need to preserve Chinese culture in his Lunar New Year message for Hongkongers.

For the first time, he filmed his annual video message surrounded by 40 consuls-general at Government House.

“Hong Kong is an international city. Local people and overseas visitors alike enjoy the festive atmosphere here during the Chinese New Year,” Leung said.

“To maintain Hong Kong’s characteristics as a melting pot of Chinese and Western cultures, we must value traditional Chinese festivals and pass on Chinese culture and arts with all-out efforts.”

Leung was also shown in the video with his wife decorating Government House for the festive season, and later watching a Cantonese opera performance and lion dance at his official home with the invited diplomats.

“We also wish all people, regardless of age and nationality, a healthy, happy and prosperous year ahead,” he said.

This year’s message was less controversial.

In 2015, the chief executive urged Hongkongers to be more like sheep, which are seen as loyal and docile animals, after describing the previous year, with the Occupy Central campaign, as being “rife with differences and conflicts”.
