Beijing will listen if majority of Hongkongers oppose second term for Leung Chun-ying, says media maverick Ricky Wong
The TV boss is still mulling a run for a Legco seat on a ticket to stop the chief executive leading the city for five more years
Media entrepreneur Ricky Wong Wai-kay is adamant that public opinion would not be irrelevant as Beijing deliberates on the next chief executive if the majority of Hongkongers oppose Leung Chun-ying’s bid for a second term.
In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Wong said the three chief executives elected since the handover were the most popular candidate when they won the top job.
Wong is planning to run in the Legislative Council elections in September with the aim of preventing Leung from serving another five-year term.
“Leung’s popularity was much higher than Henry Tang Ying-yen’s in the 2012 chief executive election. Beijing somehow was following or taking into consideration what Hong Kong people thought at the time,” Wong said.
Wong, who was a member of the Election Committee that chose the chief executive four years ago, said that like many people at the time he was also “fooled around” by Leung’s call for change.
