The man at the centre of the bookseller storm stated he would report his case to Hong Kong police in the next few days, putting his account on official record for the city’s law enforcement to follow up.

Causeway Bay Books store manager Lam Wing-kee, 61, made explosive claims last week about his abduction and eight months of detention on the mainland. He said he returned to Hong Kong on June 14 after agreeing to hand a hard disk of client information to mainland authorities, but changed his mind at the last minute and instead contacted lawmaker Albert Ho Chun-yan for help.

Lam had said it was not urgent for him to report to the police, explaining he did not have high hopes that local law enforcement would be helpful.

But speaking on a DBC radio programme on Thursday, Lam clarified he would indeed contact the police.

“I’ll contact them in the next few days,” he said. “There’s no problem with my personal safety now, so I’ll arrange it after meeting media.” He added he had media interviews to conduct on Thursday and Friday.
